The many facets of California.
Ocean. Mountains. Valleys. Desert. (And when I say mountains – I mean huge mountains. Everywhere.)
As a result of the varied and crazy landscape, California has “micro-climates.” Basically, you could be at the beach, where its 70-degrees, then drive 25 minutes inland, where its 85-degrees, and then drive another 20 minutes into a valley, and its 95-degrees.
So, in a matter of an hour, you can experience a difference of 25-degrees. It is a pretty wild experience.
The daily temperature swings (especially this time of year) are wild too. Wake up to 55-degrees, and in the same location, have it reach 85-degrees by midday.
Anyway, thought I would share those little nuggets of info. I’ve only lived in California for 4 years, so I am still learning – and fascinated by – all of these elements.
Please enjoy all of these photos I took. A random sampling of the visual treasures that surround you. Have a terrific day! 🙂

These are very nice images. It’s always great to see something as an “outsider.” I think it provides a clearer perspective sometimes.

Thank you 🙂 Exactly – a fresh perspective is what an outsider brings to a situation.

Beautiful photos of a beautiful place 🙂 Lovely natural scenery.
We have a similar thing here in Cape Town with the temperatures. Today for example there is no breeze and we are all suffering in the heat – even Little Monkey, who is usually fine!

You’re welcome 🙂 I’m not around as much at the mo – but will always pop by and catch up.
Summer has barely started here. So far under 30C, so I can’t complain too much! 🙂

Hi Kevin! 🙂 Thank you for liking “Eerie Islands: Part 1.” Nice photos! I enjoy seeing your colorful photography too. There is so much beautiful scenery in your part of California. The temperatures are fluctuating here in Sacramento too, which normally happens during the fall. The days are still warm here (70s and 80s), but the nights are getting colder (in the 50s). We are supposed to get some rain this coming week. I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend. 🙂

Hi Arlene! Thank you so much. Yeah, same here. The nights are cooling off, while the days are warm. This time of year, the temps could drop into the 60s for a week, then the following week could have 90-degree days. Nice to hear from you, and have a great week!

You are welcome, Kevin. 🙂 In addition to the fluctuating temperatures, rain will be coming here to Sacramento this week, but I am not sure how much.
It was good to hear from you too, and I hope you have a wonderful week as well. 🙂

Hey Lennon! I grew up in NY, about an hour north of NYC. Then went to college in Boston. Spent the 7 years prior to CA living and working in NYC. Hope you are having a great weekend too! Nice to hear from you. 🙂

Very beautiful photos Kevin 🙂
In many ways, I think that California is close to Spain with the weather. In north there are always more cold, in the middle it is terrible hot in the summer and cold in the winter. South has more kind temperatures all year round. I live in the right side of the mountains close to the Mediterranean Sea, where we have more friendly temperatures than just few km from here in the winter. Now in the morning, evening and night here is a little cold, but in midday I enjoyed the sun in my garden.
Wish you a beautiful weekend.

Hi Irene, thanks for the comment, and all that cool info about Spain. Ahh, that famous Mediterranean climate. Like you said, that’s pretty much what we have here in Southern CA. Always nice to hear from you, and have a great rest of the weekend!!

On Halloween, I will post a picture of a car with California license plates I came across in a remote place here in Ireland 🙂

I know, right? That was the first and only time I have ever seen that plant. I had to take a photo of it. Thanks so much for always being so supportive of my work. Looking forward to seeing that CA license plate photo. 🙂

Wow, Kevin! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and photos. With your posts (all too rare!!) I know I’m in for a treat and will settle down and peruse at leisure, wrapped up in the most stunning of landscape. The first photo is truly magnificent. Is that a mad chaotic cactus bush in another? The fluctuating temperature is crazy, do you ever get used to it? Otherworldly.

Thank you, Annika! 😎 You always say such kind and positive words. I’ve gotten used to the temp swings. But I still am in awe that I can wear a t-shirt and shorts in January. Thanks so much for your great comments. Have a terrific day!

Hi! This is my second reply. Just realized I did not answer your first question. I’m not sure what specifically that crazy plant was. But I’ve only seen it once. 😎

These pictures are great! I love cactus, so I especially enjoyed the Shabby Chic photo. I especially love how in California that if you don’t like the weather just drive somewhere else. That’s one of the first things you learn, especially in foggy San Francisco.

Hi Pam! Thank you so much. You’re totally right. I’ve been living in two different valleys for the last 3 years, so it’s always hot!☀️☀️ But it’s only a short drive to the ocean (either Malibu or Ventura) where we can enjoy the cooler air. 😎 Plus, who doesn’t like to just chill out on the beach for the day 👍🏼

Thanks Cindy! I took those at a cool little place along the 126 freeway (between Santa Clarita and Ventura Beach). The area is called the “Heritage Valley.”
